Cortisol and other corticosteroids affect the immune system by decreasing the number of circulating immune cells as well as decreasing the size of the lymphatic tissues (anti-inflammatory action). Under severe stress and with large amounts of glucocorticoids circulating in the blood, lymphocytes are unable to produce antibodies. (See Chapter 12 for more on the lymphatic system and immunity.) The role of corticosteroids in susceptibility to infectious disease is an active area of medical research.
